Competency Skills Builder

Development of a Competency Skills Builder for the Road Transport and Warehousing Industry

The Skills Council recognises the challenges that supervisors, learning and development managers and trainees face everyday in addressing the learning needs in the workplace.

One of the most common challenges lies in making sure that workplace training aligns to real job roles found in the workplace and that the training has meaning for the employer and the individual learner.

To assist industry in identifying the right information when making decisions about suitable training and qualifications, the Skills Council is developing an electronic resource called the “Competency Skills Builder”.

This resource will enable employers and employees to work collaboratively to build qualification structures in an easy and effective way.

The resource will allow users to easily locate and find details of relevant qualifications electronically including full lists of the units of competencies for each qualification. The product will be useful in choosing qualifications and units of competency that can be discussed with a Registered Training Organisation.

The electronic resource enables users to:

  • click on a button to find a qualification
  • simply “drag and drop” choices into a “shopping cart” feature to create a training plan
  • search by job title, qualification or unit of competency
  • save and print
  • see a list of current Transport and Logistics qualifications for Road Transport, Warehousing and Logistics Operations
  • access to all current units of competency for the Transport & Logistics qualifications
  • navigate easily to find information

Part of the development process, prior to its final release, is to obtain feedback and input from industry.

Opportunities for industry to provide feedback and ways to keep informed are:

  • through the Skills Council’s eNewsletter and website
  • comments through our website “Have your say”
  • dissemination of information through Industry sector meetings which are facilitated by the Skills Council on a regular basis
  • focus groups which will be run during the course of the project

The final product will be freely available and accessible mid next year, via the Skills Council’s website. Click here to register your interest.

Project Steering Committee:

The project steering committee will contribute industry expertise, feedback and advice to the project. The Skills Council is the project co-ordinator.

Members of the committee include: two industry employers, a Registered Training Organisation, an Australian Apprenticeship Centre, a State Training Board, the Transport Workers Union and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

This project has been produced with the assistance of funding provided by the Commonwealth Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.
